SWEET
INNOVATION: SUGAR-LIFT ETCHINGS BY TONY ANGUHALLUQ, KENOJUAK
ASHEVAK, JAMASIE PITSEOLAK AND JUTAI TOONOO
June 18 — July 30
The works in this exhibition were created using
a technique known as sugar-lift etching, a method of printmaking unfamiliar to
Inuit artists until recently. Rather than working with etching tools, the artists
have produced these images by painting—and in some cases pouring—a
viscous substance consisting of India ink, Ivory Snow and Gum Arabic mixed with
corn syrup directly onto the etching plate. (Some printmakers also add sugar,
giving the technique its name.) This process, which allows each composition to
be drawn directly on the plate, results in a looser, bolder and more gestural
image than seen in the traditional etchings more closely associated with Inuit
art production.
